Welcome to the West Quoddy Head State Park Trails site. As you enter West Quoddy Head State Park you will be greeted by one of the State of Maine's famous red and white striped lighthouses. It is a beauty! The lighthouse is still in operation but has been automated by the Coast Guard. Its beacon still lights the way for ships passing under its watchful eye. Be careful not to stand to close to the fog horn on a foggy day. The horn still sends out its warning cry. There is a museum housed in the renovated light keeper's quarters attached to the lighthouse. The park headquarters are also located here. Stop in to learn the history of the lighthouse and to get maps and information on the trail system in the park. The view from the lighthouse is spectacular and if you can, catch a sunrise from the lighthouse grounds. The main parking area in the park is spacious and can accommodate RV's. Here you will find water spigots, picnic benches, information bulletin boards, charcoal grilles, and of course clean restrooms. I have always enjoyed cooking a little snack on one of the grilles. Food always tastes better outdoors. Usually there is a breeze so those pesky insects are held at bay. You know the ones that always show up for their own picnic. The lighthouse is also accessible from the parking area, just follow the signs. This is one of the nice features about this park, it is laid out logically and well marked. Pets are welcome at the park but they must be on a lease. My dog loves the trails and he has a ball when we visit the park. Come eat, hike, beach comb, relax, and have fun! | ||
